Ask Qul - QA
Question : #511 Category: Holy Qur'an
Subject: Jesus (as) and the crucifixition
Question: I have a simple question,

[004:157] And because of their saying (in boast), "We killed Messiah Iesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary), the Messenger of Allah," - but they killed him not, nor crucified him, but the resemblance of Iesa (Jesus) was put over another man (and they killed that man), and those who differ therein are full of doubts. They have no (certain) knowledge, they follow nothing but conjecture. For surely; they killed him not.

The ayah says that the Jews said themselves that they killed the "messenger of Allah". So did the Jews know he was a Messenger? Because the Jews say they killed him because he was a false prophet.

Sallam
Answer: In regards to this ayah, the Ulama / Scholars of Islam advocate that the Holy Quran does not mention that Jesus (pbuh) was substituted with another man as this contradicts Allah (swt) attribute of Adl/Justice.

In terms of the Arabic language, the translation to English has shown that there are a number of ways to interpret that ayah.

It's agreed among the Scholars that the ayah mentions that a likeness was made for them, but doesn't specify if its the likeness of Jesus (phub), the killing, the crucifixion or both killing and crucifixion.
